About Us.

We Change Lives.

Our mission is twofold: we empower surgeons with innovative, customised solutions; and we enable patients to enjoy a better quality of life than was previously possible.

Born in New Zealand.

The OSSIS story began in 2007 in New Zealand with our founders’ vision to advance the custom implant industry where traditional off-the-shelf solutions were failing surgeons and their patients.

Significant milestones achieved.

Tool maker Paul Morrison and orthopaedic surgeon James Burn designed and fabricated a custom Hemi-Pelvis implant for a patient facing a hindquarter amputation. The solution allowed her to continue working and raising her family, achieving a life-changing outcome from a patient-specific implant.

Our founders were instrumental in setting up New Zealand’s first 3D printer for anatomical models. The patient scan data was used to create models which the implant was then accurately built on.

Paul and James printed our first custom titanium implant, but it was still early days for the business. As a team of just two engineers, only 5-6 implants were produced a year for patients in New Zealand.

When the Christchurch earthquakes tore through our original premises, it was make or break time for the company. Gathering all the materials that could be saved, a new office was found. Relaunching under the name OSSIS marked the start of a new era of implant technology.

OSSIS received ISO13485 certification in 2013 and in 2014 we delivered our first solution in Australia. Focusing on revision cases, we started collaborating with surgeons to enhance our process and solutions.

With a growing portfolio of successful cases and a network of surgeons choosing OSSIS for revision solutions, oncology surgeons began to use our rapid implant technology for tumour and sarcoma patients. These relationships have been pivotal in advancing our ability to deliver life-changing results for patients.

OSSIS grew to a larger team of engineers, clinical specialists, and managers, positioned on the pulse of the orthopaedic devices market. Our team enhanced our production process and nurtured our increasing relationships with surgeons around the world. Partnering with selected distributors, and engaging manufacturing partners in Europe and the USA cemented our global reach.

On the back of successful patient outcomes in Australasia, surgeons began using OSSIS’ custom implants in Europe. Please note, OSSIS products are not yet available for use in the USA.

OSSIS appoints Zimmer Biomet as its exclusive distributor in the Asia Pacific for custom 3D printed titanium hip replacement joints.

On 1st May 2023, Zimmer Biomet, a global technology leader, announced a definitive agreement to acquire OSSIS. With a 90+ year legacy of innovation and success, Zimmer Biomet solutions are used in 100+ countries.

OSSIS designs and manufactures custom-made implants which are used by surgeons to treat patients with unique clinical needs that cannot be effectively treated with off-the-shelf products. As each OSSIS implant is unique to the patient, mechanical testing and engineering data and clinical test results are often unavailable for such devices. Consequently, the mechanical integrity of such devices cannot be validated. Surgeons should consider these issues and inform their patients about the additional risks associated with custom-made implants. For product information, including indications, contraindications, warnings, precautions and potential adverse effects, see Instructions for Use or contact OSSIS.
